OVERVIEW

The Bureau of Healthcare Standards and Quality is responsible for surveys of a majority of health care providers receiving Medicare or Medicaid funds. During these surveys, all aspects of care and services are evaluated based on federal regulations and state laws and rules. (See provider program selection below.)

The Bureau of Healthcare Standards and Quality staff responsible for completing the inspections are highly trained professionals. Survey teams are comprised of registered nurses, registered dietitians, registered sanitarians, licensed social workers and life safety code specialists. Team composition is based on the size of the facility, past history of compliance with rules, and identified areas of special need.

SERVICES

• Investigation of a complaint is completed by surveyors after receiving the written documentation from the Ohio Department of Health complaint unit located in Columbus, Ohio. The toll free phone number for registering complaints is 1-800-342-0553. The complainant may choose to be anonymous. (Refer to web page site Complaint Unit for further information.)

• Speakers are available at no charge to established organizations with an audience of 50 or more participants. Basically, any topic related to the regulations and requirements enforced by the Bureau can be addressed. Some topics include review of the survey process or statistical review of care issues cited in Ohio. The maximum time for a presentation is limited to two hours.
